Business idea: Zhu Zhu Pets

Information from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhu_Zhu_Pet
The toys were created by Russ Hornsby for his company, Cepia LLC. Hornsby also created the popular Powerpuff Girls action figure line. The name comes from Chinese 猪猪 zhū zhū, meaning “little pig.” The company employs only 16 people in the U.S. and 30 in China. Zhu Zhu Pets come as 9 different characters, named Patches, Chunk, PipSqueak, Mr. Squiggles, Num Nums, Scoodles, Jilly, Nugget, and Winkie. Various accessories can be purchased for creating customized hamster habitats.

Zhu Zhu Pets can be put in either of two play modes: “nurturing mode,” in which they coo and purr, or “adventure mode,” in which they explore their habitat and respond to various stimuli. They also have a sleep mode.

Zhu Zhu Pets typically sell for around $10.00 (USD), but at certain points in 2009 the toys were marked up to over $40 because of shortages. Many retailers such as Wal-Mart and Toys R Us received massive shipments of Zhu Zhu Pets just prior to Christmas Day, thus driving the price of these toys down to less than $12 on secondary markets like eBay. In late 2009, 5 more Zhu Zhu Pets were released, and a new commercial was shot to advertise the new Zhu Zhu Pets. As of this, the number of Zhu Zhu Pets have increased due to the craze.
