Business Idea: Cereality

David Roth wasn’t always a success in business. He has dabbled in consulting and publishing and even sold frozen steaks at Sears while in college. But when he noticed a Wall Street executive taking surreptitious mouthfuls from a Cocoa Puffs box hidden behind his desk, Roth knew he was onto something.

Roth is CEO of Cereality, a cereal bar and cafe chain with a location on Walnut Street. He spoke to an audience of over 40 students yesterday evening in Steinberg-Dietrich Hall.

The company is now growing rapidly, Roth said, with plans to open franchises across the country, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom.

However, Cereality didn’t become successful overnight, Roth said.

Naysayers warned him that people would never feel comfortable eating cereal outside of their homes, that no one would pay more than $3 for a bowl of milk and cereal and that cereal manufacturers wouldn’t consider partnering with him.

However, Roth said that he “turned most of their basic assumptions about business upside-down,” Roth said, attributing his success to profitable connections, courage and luck.

Roth called himself and Cereality co-founder Rick Bacher “two outside-the-box marketing guys who are observers of human behavior and the wacky relationships people have with branded cereals.”

Today, Roth said, Cereality is more than just a cereal bar.

“We built a business out of Saturday morning,” he said. “It’s a promise to our customers that you can have five minutes of Saturday morning even on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.”

While talking at length about the inspiration for his company, Roth said he would not take questions about Cereality’s financial information because the company prefers to keep that information private.

Students said they enjoyed hearing about the process of creating Cereality.

“I think of myself as entrepreneurial as well, so it was inspiring to hear from someone with an entrepreneurial spirit that succeeded further down the line,” Wharton sophomore Andrew White said.

Wharton junior Bill Yau said Roth and Bacher bring with them an appealing message.

“Their marketing campaign … appeals to memories I had when I was a kid,” Yau said. “They’re doing a damn good job.”

CONCEPTION OF THE MAGNETIC COLLAR STAY
AS TOLD BY JONATHAN BOOS

Three years ago, I was getting dressed to take my wife out for dinner and have drinks with our friends in downtown Sarasota. My wife had bought me an expensive shirt the prior week, in which I was putting on to wear for that evening. Looking in the mirror, I could not believe the shirt’s collar. It would flare out and not stay in any position I would put it in. I looked like the flying nun! After continual complaining about the way the shirt collar looked and time running out. . .

I had an idea.

I immediately configured a make-shift magnetic collar stay. Yes, it was primitive. However, the basic idea was there and more importantly it worked. The collar adjusted exactly to the way I wanted the collar to look. Throughout the evening I must have asked my wife, “How does my collar look?” a hundred times. Each time she would say, “It looks the same”. Three hours, two Long Island Iced Teas and a Vodka Cranberry later. . . I must say I might not have looked so good, but my collar was perfect!

When I got out of bed the next day, I drove to my twin brother’s hair salon. I figured he is sort of in the fashion industry and he appears to dress very well for a straight guy. Joshua seemed very impressed with the idea, helped me do research and then we built the first real prototype.

Working as a hairstylist for thirteen years and struggling with out-of-control collars on a daily basis, Joshua became the first guinea pig to try the magnetic collar stay. Long story short, Joshua and I both knew a start of something special was conceived, when after wearing the magnetic collar stays for an entire workday, Josh stated: “Finally, I was able to concentrate on the job at hand, without having to mess with my collar every five minutes!”

We both agreed that it would be a huge undertaking for just one of us to make every man’s shirt collar to look perfect! So we decided to join together; to create Würkin Stiffs, Inc. to conquer evil collars everywhere!

Business Idea: Wuvit

Great business ideas are everywhere — if you’re willing to look closely.

Kim Levine, invented Wuvit, which are little bags that comes in various patterns and provides soothing penetrating moist heat. She describes her eureka moment in her book “Mommy Millionaire: How I Turned My Kitchen Table Idea into a Million Dollars and How You Can Too” that led to her product invention as:

“My husband was feeding deer in the backyard of our sprawling tree-lined suburban neighborhood … I saw a fifty pound bag of corn he had left standing upright next to my sewing machine and a lightbulb went off in my head. I had heard of rice in socks, surely corn would be better: It had a bigger grain that would hold on to heat longer. I put the corn in a hastily sewn pillowcase, heated it up in the microwave for a couple of minutes, then took it out and held it against my chest. I was blown away by the wave of soothing moist heat that enveloped my body.”
